             Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure and honour to invite you to the Belgrade initiative for tobacco-free Balkan - Educational and Research Conference on TOBACCO SMOKING, which will be held in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro, on June 22nd -23rd  2006.

Tobacco smoking is the single most preventable risk factor of morbidity and mortality in the world. Serbia and Montenegro ranks among the leading European countries when it comes to tobacco use. Our country is most probably the first in the world when it comes to passive smoking in children. The situation is similar in the majority of Balkan countries.

We hope to gather together in Belgrade, to learn, discuss and exchange our experiences and have a nice time together. Let us do something to enhance tobacco smoke elimination from this part of Europe.

There is no need for previous knowledge on tobacco smoking for the educational course with English as its official language. Smokers are especially encouraged to participate. So, don’t hesitate to join us if you are a smoker. Attending the Conference, maybe you will understand your need for cigarette for the first time in your life or just recognize that you really have a problem. And that is a very good beginning in the process of stopping smoking.

Belgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, with about 1.6 million inhabitants. It is located in South East Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and since ancient times it has been an important traffic focal point, at an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe.

Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, many nations live in Belgrade for centuries, and the majority of the population are Serbs (86%) of Orthodox persuasion. The official language is Serbian, while foreigners are recommended to use English in communication.
